During the years when I owned my weight-loss clinic in Denver, CO, I found my clients always seemed to struggle with the same issues—emotional eating, poor self-esteem, and low motivation.
I kept getting frustrated with the books and resources on the market, so in 2003, I wrote Life is Hard, Food is Easy, a book that could help my clients overcome these issues.
I was recently asked to revise and update the book for a new edition. But as I worked on it this past month, I realized that nothing has changed. People continue to have the same struggles they did years ago.
I’ve come a long way in my own life, but I still catch myself slipping into old patterns such as:
• Eating cookies when I feel emotionally unsettled or unsafe
• Fighting with “I don’t care” thoughts and low motivation
• Telling myself “It’s too hard” so I don’t push myself to exercise.
By the time I finished working on the new edition, I was amazed at how much reviewing the book helped me.
I loved writing out the exercises again, especially the important list “What I want from you…” to share with my husband. And the motivation chapter reminded me about how to push forward with my goals, even when it’s “too hard.”

In January, I plan to do an online class that will go through a chapter of the book each week. We will discuss the content, process ideas and solutions and work on life-changing plans for the rest of the year.
In case you aren’t familiar with this book, here’s the description of it:
It’s SO easy to reach for food when you feel sad, lonely, stressed… even happy. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Now you can learn the secrets to overcoming your struggles with emotional eating, including:
• Why you eat when you aren’t hungry
• How to get control over food in your life
• How to manage stress, anger, or depression without food
• How to get past barriers such as sabotage, perfectionism and guilt
• Simple steps to making any diet plan work
Where to buy the book
I encourage you to a copy of the book today and start updating these concepts in your own life. Here’s the Amazon US link again: Life is Hard, Food is Easy
Amazon Canada: Life is Hard, Food is Easy
Check the Amazon listing in your own country because it should be available in most areas. When you search for the book, be sure to look for the section that says “There is a new edition of this book” and click on that link.
I’m looking forward to connecting with many of you in January as we work on the book together.
P.S. Thank you to so many of you who offered kind words of love and caring after I talked about the death of my dog Peppy. Here’s the blog post about her:
Grieving a loss without eating
I’m still sad about losing her, but am glad that she didn’t suffer for a long time. She is peaceful now, and so am I.

I am so happy to hear that you are continuing to spread the word about your wonderful work.
I don’t know how many people are using the tracking app; there are a handful of us using it to support each other daily. I really love the app and hope that lots of people find it and use it.
We’ve been working through 100DWL and I think we’ll be through by the end of the year.
I’ve found Life is Hard, Food is Easy hard to study in a group, but would love to join you in January. I’ll let the little group know about it and see what they think.
