From 100 MORE Days of Weight Loss, Day 62
Recovering your feelings doesn’t mean you have to start pounding your fists and screaming.
You simply need to move out of the neutral zone and rebuild your enthusiasm for life.
Here are my answers to the three questions at the end of the lesson.
1. Identify a situation where you might be using food to avoid difficult emotions.
Three years ago, my husband retired from his job as a college professor and we moved from Colorado to Iowa to be closer to my family. It was a good move but we’ve both had some struggles adjusting to all the life changes. I know there are times when I’m eating to avoid facing my emotions of sadness, loneliness and frustration with the hard parts.
2. Consider ways to revive those emotions in healthy ways. Record your thoughts.
I’ve learned that it’s important to allow my thoughts and feelings about all aspects of the move as well as life changes. I’ve done some journaling on it as well as encouraged talking about it with my husband and my family.
3. Identify other places or situations where you try to avoid feeling, then create a plan for changing these patterns.
Because I’ve done so much work on this over the years (related to huge losses in my life,) I usually am able to let myself feel and think about all levels of emotions. But I have to review my tools a lot to stay with my skills.
