Linda’s Story
When I opened my “Weight Loss for Life” clinic in 1989, I assumed that the principles of healthy nutrition, regular exercise and behavior modification would solve most people’s problems with being overweight. Boy, was I wrong! Those things certainly didn’t fix my own weight struggles, and they also didn’t result in lasting success for my clients.
Like many people, I’ve lost over 100 pounds—by dropping the same fifteen to twenty pounds again and again. For many years, I kept trying different diet plans, typically losing weight but eventually gaining it back again.
Finally, I started thinking that maybe it wasn’t the diet that failed. Instead, I realized that I’d slipped into a pattern of eating to avoid feeling sadness and grief. Eventually, I figured out that instead of searching for another diet, I had to change the way I handled my emotions.
In my weight-loss clinic, I began revising my long-held philosophies and attitudes about weight loss. I started developing creative ways to help my clients nurture themselves and build their own motivation, I challenged them to figure out what they were feeling and to work through their negative emotions instead of using food to shove them away.
As a result of this new direction, my own weight stabilized and my eating patterns became a lot healthier. Along with this, my clinic’s effectiveness skyrocketed and I started seeing phenomenal success rates. Of those individuals who completed my intensive one-year follow-up plan, more than 90 percent maintained their weight within ten pounds of their goal. This far exceeds the national averages which are often estimated at less than 10 percent.
Over the years, I’ve continued to develop methods for helping people learn how to identify and express their emotions instead of “eating” them. Through my books, I share the stories and insights of many of these clients, as well as my own insights that I hope will continue to change many more lives in the years ahead.
